When I moved to LA at the end of August in 2004, I was at my all-time heaviest. At 5’3 and 251 pounds, I was very unhealthy and EXTREMELY unhappy. I had heard good things about Curves, so on a whim, I called up the closest gym and asked about prices. It just so happened that I called during a promotion, and the service fee was being waived in exchange for a bag of groceries. It seemed like fate, and I knew I had no excuse not to sign up!
I started going to Curves 3-4 times a week, and eating better (not perfect, but better) and after a couple months I started seeing results. 5 pounds turned into 10 pounds which turned into 20 pounds. It wasn’t always easy, and it’s still not. There are days where I eat things I probably shouldn’t eat, and weeks where I only get to the gym once or twice. But I haven’t given up, even on those days where I seem to have mysteriously gained a pound or two back.
Part of the reason I haven’t given up is because of the amazing support I received while a member of Curves. The staff was always quick to dole out compliments when I drop another few pounds, or encourage me and everyone while we’re working the circuit, or give some tips on exercises if I’m trying to target a specific area. It always made me smile when I walked into the gym, and was greeted by “Hi Emmy!” I knew I’d never want to join another gym, because I love the fact that people know and care about Emmy, not member #9528571.
In the two years that I was a member of Curves, I lost over 50 pounds and 20 inches. But I haven’t just lost weight, I’ve gained confidence. I used to hide myself in baggy clothes, walk with my head down and avoid looking at people. Now, I have fun going shopping and buying cute clothes. I walk with my head held high, and I smile at everyone. I feel like a whole new person, and I absolutely love it!
Being a member of Curves was such a positive experience, and helped me so much, that I wanted to become even more involved somehow. So this past July, I became an employee! I've been on the staff of Curves for almost 4 months now and I absolutely love it. Yes, it was a little strange at first to be wearing a name tag at the gym I was previously a member of, but I love being a part of our family. I love talking to the ladies and hearing about their successes and challenges and how supportive they are of each other. I love dancing around to our CDs and keeping everyone energized! And I love when new members ask, "Do you really get results here?" I always smile before I answer with a resounding, "YES!"
I’m fairly certain that 3 years ago, I was headed towards an early death. But that one phone call to Curves changed everything. It didn’t just give me back my self-esteem and self-confidence. It put me back in control of my life. It may even have saved my life.
